totally pleased March 17, 2006 Gail (Providence, RI) 158 out of 171 found this review helpful
My biggest rave is the Amazon.com customer service. I fell in love with the look of this kettle and found the best price on Amazon.com (with free shipping!) When it arrived, it only worked if the kettle was oriented one way on the base -- when it boiled, the water dribbled on the cord. Called Capresso Cust Svc -- 1st person said, it's supposed to do that. After another week, it got worse. Capresso would replace it if I paid it's shipping back to them. Called Amazon.com, got another in the mail days later, post-paid shipping back the first one to them. Wow! This kettle works just fine. Very rapid boiling of water, no complaints about anything. To keep the glass and that silver dome shiny, you do need to do the vinegar thing every now and again. Couldn't be happier.
Great teapot June 1, 2006 Jenn2500 (Falls Church VA) 46 out of 50 found this review helpful
I recently purchased this teapot after viewing all of the others available on Amazon and reading all of the reviews. I was very happy with this purchase. This Capresso not only looks really cool, it heats up twice as fast as my old kettle, and it actually holds more. I like that this one has a glass kettle and a covered heating element. The little blue light on the handle is nice, but I don't notice it much. Yes, it would be nice to have the cup and ounce lines on the side of the pot rather than on the back by the handle, but I don't really use them much. I just "eye" it. It also has no "ding" when the water boils, which was kind of nice on my old one, but not really necessary.
Unfortunately, after one month of use, the kettle just stopped working. I could not longer turn it on. I called the company and after a long wait to the customer service line, I left a message on their machine. They called me back the same day and had me send the machine back to the company to either fix or replace. I received a new machine within 2 weeks. I was surprised by the good service. My new machine has been working well since it was replaced.
My test results--The chemical smell is NOT from inside the kettle. February 7, 2010 babyseattle 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I've been using my kettle for several months. I read the reviews here about the chemical odor. I have a very sharp/sensitive nose and tongue. So I tested and checked(sniffed) my kettle carefully. Believe me, the odor so many reviewers were talking about is actually from the plastic handle. Look at the picture of the kettle. It is from the black part of the handle. This handle is completely out of the water you will boil. Since it is attached to the top edge of the kettle and against the glass, it gets a little warm when you are boiling water, thus you can smell the odor more easily.
Here is what I did. I boiled water with the kettle. There was NO chemical taste in the water it boiled. Of course I pour my boiled water into a cup to taste it. No bad taste at all. Then I tried to figue out where the chemical odor came from. When the kettle was cold, I sniffed and found the odor from the black part of the handle. Then I opened the lid and used a towel to cover the handle and lid. I sniffed from the top of the kettle again. This time, NO chemical odor was detected. I even checked the plastic materials used for the handle and the lid. Even they look similar. They are actually different. The material for the handle (which has the chemical odor) feels like a somewhat soft, non-slip material. It gives you a better hold of the kettle. You can actually leave a mark on it if you poke it with your nails. But the material of the lid is hard plastic. It looks like PP (#5 plastic--BPA Free, the same plastic for the new infant bottles). I was glad that the lid was odor-free too.
This kettle boils water very very fast. Faster than my other kettle which is a Breville stainless-steel one.
One more point I want to make is that many kettles claim that they are stainless steel, but they have a clear plastic window for checking water level. So you are actually still boiling water with some plastic. I am a bit OCD myself and I decided to keep this beautiful glass kettle.
Excellent product January 19, 2008 Wolff Clan (Clear Lake, CA) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
The Capresso glass kettle is an efficient, user-friendly, reliable, attractive appliance. It is doubtful that the faint plastic odor which is noticeable when it is new affects the quality or safety of the boiled water. We purchased it approx. 1 month ago and use it several times daily. We are on well water and boil all of our drinking water with the kettle. There is no strange taste. I have used Durgol, a Swiss decalcifier, once to remove the mild mineral deposits on the heating bulb. The deposits on the heating bulb cleared up and the glass is crystal clear. We enjoy using this kettle (we have owned other brands) and hope that it will be a dependable product for a long
time for all who purchase it.
Best hot water out there January 10, 2007 C. Weiss (Portland, OR) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
It's fast, reliable, and so far durable. It's great fun (and useful) to be able to see the water level and the water when it's boiling. Looks great and does a great job.
Negatives:
I have a fear that refilling it when it's hot will crack the glass, but so far fear's unfounded.
It's offgassing some odd hot-plastic smell, but that's gotten much better over the 2 months we've had it.
